Thin-section detrital zircon geochronology mitigates bias in provenance investigations

چکیده

Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology has enabled advances in the understanding of sediment provenance, transportation pathways, and depositional age sedimentary packages. However, sample selection processing can result biasing detrital spectra. This paper presents a novel approach using in-situ measurements on thin-sections to provide greater confidence maximum ages provenance interpretations. New data 310 grains from 16 Triassic Mungaroo Formation two wells Northern Carnarvon Basin, Australia, are presented. Whilst modes consistent with previous work, there some differences relative proportions modes, which is partly attributed lack small hand-picked grain mounts. The bias quantified via size comparison dated (in or mounts) all zircons identified bulk-mounts thin-sections. youngest mode (∼320 – 195 Ma) an active margin north, likely South West Borneo and/or Lhasa terrane. reveal 197 Ma for upper part Formation, suggesting deposition continued into Early Jurassic. Detrital Zircon Geochronology by Laser-ablation Multicollector Icpms at the Arizona Laserchron Center

Detrital zircon geochronology is rapidly evolving into a very powerful tool for determining the provenance and maximum depositional age of clastic strata. This rapid evolution is being driven by the increased availability of ion probes and laser ablation ICP mass spectrometers, which are able to generate age determinations rapidly, at moderate to low cost, and of sufficient accuracy for most ap...

Provenance of Triassic and Jurassic Sandstones in the Banda Arc: Petrography, Heavy Minerals and Zircon Geochronology

Quartz-rich sandstones in the Banda Arc Islands are thought to be equivalent of Mesozoic sandstones on the Australian NW Shelf where they are important proven and potential reservoirs. Previous studies suggested that rivers draining Australia provided most of the sediment input and there have been suggestions of a northern provenance for some Timor sediments. We present results from a provenanc...

DETRITAL ZIRCON U/Pb AGE DETERMINATION: UNDERSTANDING THE PROVENANCE OF THE LATE- CRETACEOUS SHUMAGIN FORMATION, ALASKA

The Chugach-Prince William (CPW) terrane is an Upper Cretaceous to Eocene accretionary complex exposed for ~2200 km in southern Alaska, extending from Baranof Island in the east to Sanak Island in the west. One of the thickest subduction-related accretionary complexes in the world, the CPW terrane is composed of deep-water flysch and associated volcanic rocks and is intruded by near-trench plut...

Wrangellia Superterrane. The Paleozoic to Mesozoic Wrangellia superterrane (Insular terrane) consists of intraoceanic volcanic assemblages and basement rocks of the Peninsular, Wrangellia, and Alexander terranes (Plafker et al, 1994). The magmatic-arc assemblages of the Peninsular terrane appear to have been built upon the Wrangellia composite terrane prior to the midCretaceous and include: 1) ...
